How cooking actually works

Four rules cover the entire system. Once they click, you can cook anything on purpose instead of by luck.

5ingredient slots in every dish
Rulescolour and type decide which dish
Pointsexact total decides the Pokemon
Potdecides arrival level and cost

The part almost every guide gets wrong is the third one. Points are not just a quality score. Each dish has a separate Pokemon pool at each exact point total. Blue Soda at 5 points and Blue Soda at 10 points attract different Pokemon entirely, which is why Dratini needs exactly 10 and not simply a good mix.

Every attractable Pokemon and its recipe

Only 79 of the 151 Pokemon can be attracted by cooking, and all of them are basic forms. This table shows the best dish for each one, the exact point total it needs, and the cheapest mix that reaches it.

Cheapest mix means the fewest precious ingredients that still hit the exact total. Use the finder above for alternative mixes and other dishes that attract the same Pokemon.

All 91 recipe variants

This is the part that makes Pokemon Quest confusing. A dish is not one recipe. Blue Soda at 5 points and Blue Soda at 10 points are different recipes with different Pokemon. Here is every variant that actually attracts something, with a mix that can only produce that dish.

All 18 dishes and their exact rules

Each dish checks how many of your five ingredients match a colour, a type, or a texture. The counts below are the real minimums and maximums the game uses.

Watch the minimums. Where a dish description says a few, the game means 2 or more, not 1. That single detail is why so many players end up with Mulligan Stew when they expected something else.

The 10 ingredients and their point values

Every ingredient carries a colour, a type, a texture and a point value. Point values are what most guides list incorrectly, so here they are straight from the game data.

Rainbow MatterEvery typeEvery colourBoth3
Mystical ShellLegendary onlyNoneNone4

Mystical Shell is worth 4 points, not 2. This matters because Ambrosia of Legends sits in a 17 to 20 point band that no other dish can reach. Five Mystical Shell gives the maximum 20. Rainbow Matter counts as every colour and every type at once, and is worth 3.

Cooking pots

The pot does not change which Pokemon you attract. It changes the level that Pokemon arrives at, and cost.

Pot tiers, cost and effect
PotIngredients eachUnlocksEffect
Brass3StartLowest arrival level
Bronze10Level 20+Higher arrival level
Silver15Level 40+Higher again
Gold20Level 70+Highest arrival level

Recipe points decide which Pokemon shows up. The pot decides how strong it is when it arrives. Cook a cheap dish in a Brass Pot while you are farming a specific Pokemon, then repeat it in Gold once you know the mix works.

Things worth knowing

  • Cooking never gives evolved forms. All 79 attractable Pokemon are basic forms. Dratini arrives, then evolves to Dragonair at level 30 and Dragonite at level 55.
  • Mulligan Stew is the fallback, not a failure. It fires when your five ingredients satisfy no other rule, and it has its own Pokemon pool at each point total.
  • Sometimes more than one dish fits. When a mix satisfies several rules the game serves one dish, so the finder above shows you a mix that is unambiguous wherever possible.
  • Farm Mystical Shell for legendaries. Nothing else reaches the 17 point floor that Ambrosia of Legends needs.

Pokemon Quest released on Nintendo Switch on 30 May 2018 and on iOS and Android on 27 June 2018, developed by GAME FREAK. There is more background on Pokémon Quest.

Common questions

How do I get a specific Pokemon in Pokemon Quest?

Cook the dish that Pokemon belongs to at an exact ingredient point total. Dratini for example comes from Blue Soda à la Cube at exactly 8, 9 or 10 points. The finder above gives a mix that can only produce that one dish.

How many recipes are there in Pokemon Quest?

There are 18 dishes, but 91 recipe variants that actually attract Pokemon, because each dish has a different Pokemon pool at each exact point total. Across those variants there are 3911 valid five ingredient mixes.

What recipe gets legendary Pokemon?

Ambrosia of Legends à la Cube. It needs 4 or 5 Mystical Shell, which lands between 17 and 20 points. Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres and Mewtwo all come from this dish.

How many points is each ingredient worth?

Tiny Mushroom, Bluk Berry, Apricorn and Fossil are 1 point. Big Root, Icy Rock, Honey and Balm Mushroom are 2. Rainbow Matter is 3 and Mystical Shell is 4.

Why did I get Mulligan Stew instead of my dish?

Mulligan Stew only fires when your five ingredients satisfy no other dish rule. If you were aiming for something else, one of your counts fell short. Remember that a few means 2 or more, not 1.

Can one mix make more than one dish?

Yes, many mixes satisfy several dish rules at once and the game then picks one. Every mix labelled unambiguous on this page satisfies exactly one rule, so the outcome is certain.

Which cooking pot should I use?

The highest one you have unlocked. The pot sets the level the Pokemon arrives at, not which Pokemon appears. Test a mix in a Brass Pot first, then repeat it in Gold once it works.

Can cooking attract evolved Pokemon?

No. Only 79 of the 151 Pokemon can be attracted by cooking and all are basic forms. Dratini arrives, then evolves to Dragonair at level 30 and Dragonite at level 55.

Rizwan Aslam

Rizwan builds reference tools and game databases. Every number on this page was derived from the game’s own cooking data rather than copied from other guides, then checked against in-game results. Two values here correct errors that are repeated across most Pokemon Quest guides. If something does not match your game, say so and it gets fixed.

Data note. Ingredient values, dish rules and Pokemon pools were derived from the game’s cooking data, with thanks to the Pokemon Quest datamining community whose work made the original extraction possible. The 2002 possible five slot mixes were solved directly against those rules.
